Types of Residential Fencing
There are many types of residential fencing:

Vinyl Fencing
Vinyl fencing is a popular type of fencing for residential homes. Vinyl fences can be made to look like wood fences also. Vinyl fences can be solid panel (where you can see through), or have spaces where you can still see through the fence.
Wood Fencing
Wood fencing is great for adding decor to a yard. Even using a short section of fence or two just for decoration can really dress-up a yard. Wood fencing is also popular on farms around fields. Wood fencing does require some maintenance in terms of needing to be restained or repainted every two to three years.
Chain Link Fencing
Chain link fences are usaully the cheapest type of fences for residential applications. We contacted a fence company in Yuma AZ for details on how much chain link fences cost, and a basic four foot chain link fence costs about five dollars per lineal foot for an average sized yard.
Wrought Iron Fencing
Wrought iron fences are generally the most expensive type of fencing. Wrought iron also is the best looking type of fence and has endless options of customization. Wrought iron can be short in height or can be over ten feet, depending on the project needs.
Proper Construction of Residential Fencing
A long lasting fence starts with proper installation, which the first element is a proper foundation. A proper foundation is built by augering a hole and filling with concrete. For heavy weight fences a metal cage is installed in the hole before filling with concrete. Once the concrete bases are poured, then the metal pole bases are mucked into the concrete. Once the concrete is cured, then the fence can be installed on top of the metal pole bases.
Quality materials are another key element of a long lasting fence. Ensuring the the metal used for chain link fences and wrought iron fences are the correct grade and thickness is crucial to make sure that the fence does not rust or warp. Even with the correct materials, some maintenance is needed on metal fences such as cleaning.
Types of Wood for Wood Fences
Not all wood fences are made from the same types of wood. Pine, Maple, Acacia, and Cedar are a handful of wood fence material types. Our favorite are cedar fences because they do not require staining and painting. Cedar fences are generally the most expensive fences as initial cost, but when you factor in the cost savings of not having the repaint or restain cedar fences, in the long run they are a great value.
Maple and pine fencing do require staining and painting every two to three years. Preparing for painting or staining can be completed by a pressure wash or by scraping the wood. Pressure washing is our suggested means of preparing for a restain or repaint because pressure washing also cleans the wood for painting.
Chain Link Fence Options
Chain link fences have lots of options:
- privacy slats
- vinyl coated – which can come in a number of colors
- various heights
- thicker gage when stronger fencing is needed
- various heights
- barb wire can be added for high security needs
All-in-all, fencing adds a lot of functionality to a yard. Privacy is added which allows you to enjoy your back yard without neighbors seeing you. Fencing adds decor to dressing up a yard. Many home buyers find fencing desirable for these reasons and also dog lovers like to have fences so that their dogs can run leash-free.
